Four Alarm Fire

“This day is sooo boring….” The little boy mumbled as he shuffled along at the back of the class. He couldn’t understand why they where all being forced to go to the museum. It was the dumbest field trip of the year.

Glancing around every now and then, but mostly watching the floor as he followed along, the day felt so long. None of these weird abstract paintings where of any interest to the seven year old boy. It made no sense. Many where just splotches. How could this be art? A dot, that's art? Weird.

Nothing had any meaning to him. At least until he saw the fire. It took the boredom right out of him. It was amazing. The bright reds, yellows, oranges and the black. The picture drew him in and made him feel apart of it.

He could imagine himself as a fireman. The heat and smoke. Even fear of facing down such a monster. The artist was great to portray all these things through one simple painting. The seven year old boy then decided, he too would become an artist, so he could show others something great.

  1. I sometimes feel the same way about art. How could this "abstract" painting be appreciated by so many people? I don't get it. Great insight into the mind of a young boy.

And this is exactly what art can do. You can see a hundred paintings that don't speak to you, until finally one does.

Also, I love that this boy is inspired to become an artist- not a fireman. Good job.
